Lolita's Personality

They can get bored easily and will find other ways to entertain themselves when their owners do not interact with them enough. Macaws that aren't socialized may become aggressive and can even bite. It is important that boundaries are clearly established to ensure that the macaw doesn't feel threatened.
Blue and Gold Macaws, in general are active birds who love to play, interact, and climb. They should spend at least 2 to 3 hours every day outside to keep their minds stimulated and for physical exercise. They enjoy playing games, learning tricks, and listening to music. They love visiting playgrounds and parks as well as hiking, local eateries and bars. In addition to being a fun pet they also make loving pets for children.
The birds can be quite loud, despite their love for them. They can also be a nuisance for those who live nearby. They are capable of ear-shattering calls and screech-calls, which could be a problem in apartments and condos or near children who might be startled by their noise.

Lolita's care
For decades activists have been lobbying for the retirement of Lolita's tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy stirred public outrage for orca Keiko's reintegration into the wild, activists and marine biologists believed that Lolita might have a similar fate. Sadly, she did not get a chance to return to the sea.
Lolita's captors, also known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her in danger. They harm her health by requiring her to perform for tourists. They push her to the limit with high-speed circles and head-first diving, expose her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. In addition, they keep her in an incredibly small tank that is only one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.
In 2022, a new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita an aunt of theirs, promised to come up with a plan with a group of Lolita supporters known as Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe, to move her to open water eventually. The plan would have included a facility located on the west coast of Washington in which she could reside for the remainder of her life, receive human care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen was planned to be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and be was surrounded by ocean, but not concrete tanks.
If the plan had been successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki), might still be alive. In the wild, killer whales are social animals and are close to their family members until death. Lolita, who has lived alone at Seaquarium in isolation for 40 years, is now being released into the wild. Many activists across the country have demanded Lolita's release from Seaquarium and eventual release in the wild. The activists include Ric O'Barry, a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

Lolita's Diet

Sadly these plans came late for the whale that was so beloved, who passed away on Friday due to what was believed to be a kidney issue.
